Benefits of Implementing REDD Plus

Developing countries, including Malaysia, which meet REDD Plus requirements will be eligible to apply for Results-Based Payments (RBPs) for verified emission reductions. As such, REDD Plus creates an incentive for these countries to reduce emissions from forests and invest in low-carbon pathways to sustainably manage their forest development. By implementing REDD Plus activities, Malaysia will be able to reduce emissions from the forestry sector, in turn playing a role in the global fight against climate change. In addition, REDD Plus also offers environmental, social and economic benefits. Most recently, it is being integrated into green economy strategies.

REDD Plus can also be a tool to realise the achievement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development adopted by world leaders in September 2015. The agenda calls on countries to achieve the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030. While REDD Plus is directly linked to Climate Action (Goal 13), it can also play an important role towards Responsible Consumption and Production (Goal 12), Gender Equality (Goal 5), Life on Land (Goal 15), and Decent Work and Economic Growth (Goal 8), among others.
